Banco en Tokyo

Bancos de arquitectura atrevida /colorista. ¿Es esa la nueva tendencia? Hace poco me sorprendió el diseño de BNP Paribas en Paris, ahora esto, una oficina del banco Sugamo Shinkin bank en Tokyo, diseño de Emmanuelle Moureaux. Bonito desde fuera con esas capas horizontales de colores que penetran el edificio. Los interiores en cambio no me gustan tanto. ¿Qué pasó con esas capas horizontales en el interior? Me hubiera gustado alguna señal de ellas en el diseño. Y ya que estoy criticando… esos techos sobrecargados de aparatos de aire acondicionado, puntos de luz, y dibujos no me convencen mucho. Me quedo con el exterior.

Banks with playful design. Is that the new trend? Not long ago I was surprised by the look of this BNP Paribas office, now this, a branch of Sugamo Shinkin bank in Tokyo, designed by Emmanuelle Moureaux. It looks great on the outside with those horizontal layers of color sticking out from the facade. But what happened with those very layers in the interior? It would have been nice to see that gesture reflected inside the building. And while I am criticizing…isn’t the ceiling a bit too crowded with air conditioning, lights and drawings? Still, congrats for the exterior!

COS Madrid

Abre la tienda COS en Claudio Coello, Madrid, buenas noticias. Me encanta la ropa que tienen y acabo de descubrir que me gusta mucho la página web también. Tienen un concepto muy cool con muchas sorpresas, como música, arte, interiores, fotos, etc. Un poco como un blog, pero en formato distinto. Han logrado crear un ambiente virtual agradable. A ver como les queda el diseño de la tienda de Madrid!

How nice is it that COS is opening on Claudio Coello in Madrid? I really like their clothes and I really like their website. They have such a cool concept with lots of treats, like music clips, art, interiors, photos, etc. Rather like a blog actually, but in a different format. I am all into that mood they are creating. Lets see the interior design of their Madrid shop, as soon as they open!

Peter Marino

He estado un rato mirando los interiores de las tiendas más importantes de las marcas de lujo como Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Fendi, Dior etc. Muchas de ellas son obra del arquitecto Peter Marino, cuya foto veis aquí. ¿Estas pensando lo mismo que yo? ¿Village People? Marino es prueba de que los arquitectos vienen en muchos estilos diferentes. Es amigo de Warhol en los años 70, motero de alma se siente claustrofóbico en un coche, y ha dejado de utilizar ropa ”normal”. Todo un personaje, me encanta eso. Si queréis saber algo más de este hombre tan curioso, y porque dice que no le gusta diseñar casas privadas si es la primera del cliente, aquí hay un artículo interesante.

Many of the flagship stores of the luxury fashion brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Fendi, Dior etc are designed by an architect called Peter Marino. This is the man, and yes, I know, the image is interesting. Village People? I guess architects really do come in many different packages. This man started out designing a place for Warhol in the 70′s, and has been in business ever since. I found this article where he explains why he stopped using normal clothes, and why he would avoid designing someone’s first home. And why he feels claustrophobic in a car. I love to read about architects with an interesting image or personality. What do you think of his designs?

Clásico con un “algo”

Me gustan los ambientes clásicos que tienen algún toque original, algún contraste, tal vez algo gráfico, algún elemento dramático, un material inesperado, algo que rompa con lo clásico y anime un poco el diseño. Como ejemplo os pongo estas fotos encontradas en el ciber-espacio por Daniel. Cada uno de los ambientes tiene algún toque inesperado que, en mi opinión, hace el diseño infinitamente más atractivo.

I like classic style decor but with an original twist, maybe something graphic, an unexpected material, a sculptural or dramatic piece… something that breaks with the general classic style and spices things up a bit. These photos are good examples of what I mean.

Antonio López

Rebajas espontáneas de libros en el Vips de Lopez de Hoyos, Madrid. No es el típico sitio donde me imagino encontrar cosas interesantes de arte y diseño, pero inesperadamente he encontrado un libro muy bonito con bocetos de Antonio López. Me gusta mucho la obra de este artista, de hecho creo que tengo debilidad por cualquier obra que retrata lo cotidiano con tanto detalle y delicadeza. Por cierto, recuerdo que entre las futuras expos del Thyssen está una de Antonio López que no hay que perderse. ¿No es increíble su obra?

Spontaneous book sales at Vips in Lopez de Hoyos, Madrid. Not the typical place where I expect to find great art and design books, but I did come across a book with beautiful sketches by Antonio López. I really like his work, actually I generally like art where everyday objects and everyday people are depicted with such detail and finesse. By the way, I remembered that Thyssen museum will have an exhibition with Antonio Lopez’ art in the near future, not to miss! Isn’t his work amazing?

Butaca de los hermanos Campana

Os escribo desde mis vacaciones de Semana Santa para comentar esta butaca de los hermanos Campana. Me temo que el diseño no me despierta ni un sentimiento positivo. Creo que es la primera vez que pongo un post simplemente para comentar lo feo que me parece el diseño. ¿Os parece muy mal? Butaca tipo raza-perro-arrugado-despellejado. Y ya que estoy aprovecho para confesar que el trabajo de los Campana siempre me ha parecido complicado de gustar, aunque me gustaría quererlo. Miradlo vosotros, si aguantáis la irritante página flash que tienen.

I am breaking my easter holiday silence to comment on this armchair made by the Campana brothers. I’m afraid this design leaves me with no positive feelings whatsoever. I think it’s the first time I post something merely because of how ugly I find the design. Is that bad? Skinned-wrinkly-dog-armchair? I might as well seize the moment to tell you that I never really loved any of the Campana brothers designs, even though I tried. You have a look, if you can stand the irritating flash page that is…

“Transparent Chair” de Nendo

¡Ah, el diseño japonés! Tienen un toque mágico, es algo excepcional. ¿Como lo hacen, eso de reducir todo a su esencia mínima?

Ya os he hablado de Nendo, los diseñadores de esta silla llamada ”Transparent Chair”, os acordáis ¿no? Su filosofía es interesante, creen que la vida cotidiana está llena de esos pequeños momentos, que ellos definen como momentos ”!”. No los reconocemos, pero que son los momentos que enriquecen nuestras vidas. El trabajo de Nendo es reconstituir esos pequeños momentos y transformarlos en algo que es fácil entender.

Ahora parecen haberse obsesionado con lo transparente, de ahí esta silla que es como sentarse en el aire. A la vista parece que no hay nada más que respaldo y reposabrazos, sin embargo al sentarse envuelve el cuerpo y lo sujeta. La descripción despierta la curiosidad, ¿no os parece?

What’s the secret behind japanese design? It seems almost magical, exceptional. ¿How do they do it, limit everything to it’s mere essentials?

Nendo caught my eye again, this time with their transparent chair. Do you remember them, their philosophy is interesting, they think life is made up by special moments they call ”!” moments, small enriching moments hidden in our everyday life, but that we don’t recognize. Nendo say: ”…we want to reconstitute the everyday by collecting and reshaping them into something that’s easy to understand.”

And apparently now they are obsessed with transparency. The chair is like sitting in thin air. Nendo’s description makes me curious. It looks like it consists of nothing but arm- and backrest yet it wraps and supports the body. Seems genius! I would love to try it out.

Estación de metro en Nápoles de Karim Rashid

¿Viaje de acido a los años sesenta? Es como define la revista sueca Plaza Magazine el nuevo diseño de Karim Rashid en el metro de la universidad de Nápoles. Me imagino que tanto movimiento hace doler los ojos de los suecos, y ya que lo pienso es verdad que todo puede ir mal durante un viaje de ácido…pero también pienso que esto es una manera bastante más sana de vivir emociones fuertes. Y yo si quiero emociones fuertes! Karim Rashid sigue su rollo, y me juego cualquier cosa que muchos diseñadores le tienen envidia por poder permitirse unos proyectos tan arriesgados, que sus clientes se lo permitan. …¿O será que está atrapado en su propio nicho? ¿Tal vez le gustaría hacer algo más sobrio pero ningún cliente quiere eso de él? Mirad sus trabajos anteriores y veréis a qué me refiero.

Acid trip back to the sixties? That’s how swedish Plaza Magazine defines Karim Rashid’s design for the Naples university metro. I imagine when this much is going on in an interior it just hurts the swedish eye, and granted everything can go wrong during an acid trip… but I figure this is a much healthier way to experience some strong emotions. And I do want strong emotions! Karim Rashid does his thing, love it or hate it. I bet many designers are envious of his freedom, the fact that he can get away with these crazy designs, that his clients let him do it. Or is he trapped in his own niche? Maybe he would like to do something a bit more sober, but no client wants that from him. Check out some of his earlier work and you´ll know what I mean.

Casa de Grupo Aranea

Acabo de ver este post en Dezeen, una casa española de Grupo Aranea, construida por el propietario encima de la casa de su madre en un pueblo del sur. Es uno de esos proyectos que me llamó la atención. El exterior tiene muy buen aspecto según yo, combina muy bien con la casa antigua, y eso no debe ser fácil conseguir. Las terrazas triangulares no tienen barandilla…inquietante, pero bonito. Primero pensé que el interior era un poco raro con todos esos ángulos, pero inmediatamente cambié de opinión. Los arquitectos lo describen como introvertido, ¿será por eso que la casa me hace pensar en Hopper (silencio, soledad)?

¿Que os parece? ¿Tiene algo Hopper-esco la casa?

I just stumbled upon this post on Dezeen. Spanish house by Grupo Aranea built by the owner on top of his mothers house. It’s one of those projects I just had to look twice at. The exterior looks great in my opinion, it just combines very well with the older building, and that must be a difficult thing to achieve. No railings on those triangular terraces…hm a little disturbing. At first I thought the interior was a bit weird with those irregular angles, but it immediately grew on me. The architects describe it as introverted, maybe that’s why I think of Hopper (quiet, solitude) when I see the building?
